Reconciliation week guest profile: Kaine Saltan Babij

Tuesday 2 June, 2020

365体育官网27 May – 3 June 2020 marks Australia’s Reconciliation week. A week which is dedicated to strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.

As a part of The World’s Smallest Stage365体育官网 we have been collaborating with local indigenous choreographers and dancers from Kurruru Arts and Culture Hub. Kurruru, meaning ‘circle’ in local Kaurna language, is one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth performing arts companies committed to supporting the ongoing maintenance of culture, community and identity.

365体育官网With the 2020 reconciliation week having the timely theme of ‘In This Together’, it has been particularly significant for ADT to recognise and celebrate Aboriginal Australian culture, as we are working closer than ever with our local dance community and Kurruru.

We are fortunate to have Kurruru’s Resident Choreographer, Kaine Saltan Babij, join The World’s Smallest Stage project. Kaine is of Eastern Arrernte, Afghan and Croatian heritage, and was born and raised in Whyalla, South Australia. The pursuit of artistic growth has seen Kaine become a part of the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) – Sydney, and the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA) – Brisbane.

Kaine has a history of showcasing, teaching and choreographing Australian Indigenous Contemporary and Contemporary Dance across the globe having toured extensively throughout Australia, North and South America, Asia and Europe.

Notably, Kaine was Nominated for ‘Best Male Dancer’ in Victoria’s 30th Annual Green Room Awards for his role in ‘Terrain’, choreographed by Frances Rings for Bangarra Dance Theatre. He has a diverse history of working in the performing arts from music videos to feature films and has performed at many festivals and commercial events around Australia.  Kaine is now the resident choreographer for Kurruru Arts and Cultural Hub.

We are thrilled to have Kaine be a part of The World’s Smallest Stage365体育官网, joining the team as one of 10 Choreographers.
